Cyprus Bar Association warns of justice system weaknesses

The Cyprus Bar Association has welcomed observations made by the Fiscal Council regarding the long-standing weaknesses within the Cypriot justice system. The Association stated that these findings confirm issues previously highlighted to both the executive and judicial authorities.

According to the Association, the current state of the first-instance courts is “particularly worrying” for citizens. They cited several critical factors undermining modernization efforts, including limited resources, a lack of human personnel, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of modern technology. Additionally, the Association pointed to significant delays in the establishment and operation of the Independent Judicial Administration Service.

The Bar Association emphasized that addressing these problems requires a comprehensive long-term vision and integrated planning rather than fragmented interventions. They also noted that various European Commission reports and recommendations have yet to be implemented, calling for greater decisiveness to resolve the current impasse.
