Cyprus child poverty falls while overall poverty risk nears 20%

A European Commission report shows that the share of children in Cyprus at risk of poverty or social exclusion has declined in recent years, signalling progress in some areas. However, the report highlights persistent inequalities, especially in energy poverty and equal access to essential services.

Eurostat data for 2025 indicates that almost one in five people in Cyprus – about 167,000 individuals – are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, an increase of roughly 3,000 from the previous year. Women outnumber men in this group by 18,000, a gap of about three percent. The figures underscore that despite improvements for children, overall socioeconomic vulnerability remains significant.
