Cyprus Committee calls for urgent reform of Central Prisons
Members of the Cyprus Committee on Law, Justice and Public Order have highlighted the urgent need to modernize the national correctional system following a visit to the Central Prisons. Foteini Tsiridou, Chair of the Committee, identified several critical issues, including prison overcrowding and the ongoing presence of mobile phones and drugs within the facilities.
The Committee noted an increase in inmates convicted of drug-related offenses and sexual abuse involving minors. To address these challenges, officials discussed the promotion of electronic monitoring to alleviate overcrowding and the necessity of strengthening rehabilitation and therapeutic programs to aid prisoner reintegration.
Regarding infrastructure, the Committee is addressing the relocation of the Central Prisons, noting that current facilities do not meet modern European standards. The goal is to establish a correctional center by 2026 that complies with international specifications. The Committee also plans to hold closed-door sessions to discuss sensitive matters and will request pending legislation from the relevant Ministry.
