Greece and Cyprus complete DNA collection for 1974 missing persons
Greek Deputy Minister of National Defense Thanasis Davakis and Cypriot Presidential Commissioner Marios Chartsiotes have successfully completed the collection of genetic material from the families of Greek missing persons from the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
During a visit to Argos Orestiko, Kastoria, the officials met with the family of Konstantinos Kentra to obtain the final necessary DNA sample. This milestone addresses a long-standing gap caused by several families previously declining to provide samples for personal reasons. The completion of this database is considered a decisive step toward identifying the remaining 37 Greek missing persons out of the original 77.
To date, 40 individuals have been identified. The identification process will be supported by specialized medical personnel from the 251 General Air Force Hospital, utilizing advanced laboratory capabilities. Both officials emphasized that the cooperation between Greece and Cyprus is a humanitarian priority aimed at providing closure to the families and honoring the fallen.
