Cyprus considers installing security cameras on all school buses

The Cypriot government is considering the installation of security cameras on all buses used for student transport. This measure is being evaluated as a permanent solution to address incidents of misconduct during school commutes.

Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Evi Thomou, announced the proposal following a meeting involving the Minister of Education, the Chair of the Parliamentary Transport Committee, the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, and representatives from parent associations.

The Ministry of Transport will cover the installation costs. Implementation will require formal procedures, including the issuance of tenders and the establishment of operational protocols. To ensure compliance, the process will follow the guidelines of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection.

In the event of a reported incident, authorized representatives from the contracted companies will provide footage to the police for investigation. Until the cameras are installed, interim measures such as the presence of supervisors, inspectors, or parents will continue to be utilized.
