Cyprus Court orders immediate prison sentence for man who killed neighbor's cat
A Cyprus Court of Appeal has ordered a man to immediately serve a two-month prison sentence for the killing of a neighbor's cat. The man had previously been sentenced by the Nicosia District Court to two months in prison, but with a three-year suspension.
The Court of Appeal overturned the suspension, ruling that the circumstances of the crime and the manner in which it was committed did not justify avoiding immediate execution of the sentence. According to the case details, the incident occurred in August 2021, when the man repeatedly struck the cat on the head with a broomstick before placing it in a basket, where the animal died shortly after.
In its unanimous decision, the Court emphasized the necessity of strict enforcement for such crimes to deter both the perpetrator and others. The ruling noted that the need to protect defenseless animals from human violence must be reflected in the sentencing process.
