Cyprus Customs seizes 28,000 counterfeit condoms
Cyprus Customs officials seized 28,000 counterfeit condoms during an inspection of a shipping container arriving from Greece on October 22. The shipment, which contained consolidated cargo for multiple recipients, was selected for radiographic and physical examination following a risk analysis.
Preliminary evidence and submitted invoices suggest the products infringe upon the intellectual property rights of a well-known commercial brand. The company owner reportedly admitted that the items are imitations. The Limassol Customs office is conducting a further investigation, and the seized goods are expected to be destroyed.
Customs authorities have issued a warning regarding the health risks associated with counterfeit medical and contraceptive products. They noted that such imitations are not manufactured using the same quality control processes or materials as authentic brands, which can lead to unintended pregnancies and the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases.
