Cyprus detects H5N1 avian influenza in Athalassa National Forest Park

The Department of Veterinary Services of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment has confirmed an outbreak of the H5N1 avian influenza virus in Cyprus. The case involves a goose identified at the lake within the Athalassa National Forest Park in the Nicosia District.

Authorities have notified the European Commission and the World Organisation for Animal Health. Laboratory testing is ongoing in collaboration with the Community Reference Laboratory to determine the virulence of the detected strain.

Visitors to the park are advised to avoid approaching, feeding, or having close contact with birds. Poultry farm owners must implement measures to prevent contact between wild or migratory birds and domestic flocks. Additionally, owners of domestic poultry are instructed to keep birds in enclosed, covered areas to prevent contact with wild birds, particularly in communities near wetlands. Strict prohibitions are in place regarding outdoor poultry grazing and the provision of food or water in open areas that could attract wild birds.
