Cyprus diplomatic dispute over mine clearance and crossing points

A diplomatic dispute has emerged regarding the Cyprus issue, specifically concerning new crossing points and Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) related to mine clearance. The upcoming meeting between President Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodulidis is expected to address barricades in Mia Milia (Haspolat) and Athienu (Kiracıköy), as well as the situation in Pile.

Reports indicate that the Haspolat area is strategically significant due to its proximity to the General Hospital and the Nicosia-Limassol highway. There are concerns that moving positions in this area could weaken the security posture of the National Guard. Furthermore, the clearance of minefields in the Akıncılar region is linked to discussions regarding the United Nations buffer zone. It has been suggested that for mine clearance to proceed, Turkish tanks may need to be moved to a safe distance to mitigate security concerns.
