Cyprus economy shows growth amid inflation and budget debates

The Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, Christodoulos Patsalides, reported that the Cypriot economy continues to show positive performance with satisfactory growth rates and fiscal stability. During discussions regarding the 2027 State Budget, Patsalides noted that GDP growth is expected to be around 3% annually. However, he warned that inflationary pressures, energy price fluctuations, and geopolitical uncertainties—specifically the war in the Middle East—continue to impact economic prospects. Cyprus saw inflation reach 5.2% in September 2026, driven by energy costs, service sector pressures, and rising rents.

In contrast, the political party AKEL has criticized the 2027 Budget, arguing that while fiscal surpluses are increasing, social challenges remain unresolved. AKEL spokesperson Harris Polycarpou stated that the budget prioritizes administrative spending over developmental investment and fails to address the rising cost of living, housing issues, and income inequality. The party contends that the current fiscal direction serves large financial interests rather than the majority of citizens, calling for a shift in priorities toward social welfare, healthcare, and education.
