Cyprus educators hold emergency assembly over strike and salary demands

Educators working in support programs of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth in Cyprus are scheduled to hold an emergency general assembly on Friday, October 2, at 9:00 a.m. The meeting follows new data presented by the Ministry during a recent meeting with representatives of fixed-term and indefinite-term educators.

The assembly aims to evaluate these new developments, specifically regarding demands for salary compensation. Educators have previously protested, noting that they remain without wages or unemployment benefits during the summer months following the conclusion of support programs. They are also seeking to guarantee their employment within the programs for the upcoming school year.

Andreas Kounnis, a representative of PASYE-PEO, stated that the assembly will determine whether to proceed with a planned strike on the following Monday, which has already been called for by both PEO and SEK. While details regarding income security were not fully disclosed, Kounnis noted that progress has been made regarding the announcement of positions for nearly all programs.
