Cyprus Electricity Market Association urges faster energy storage to curb PV curtailment

The Electricity Market Association of Cyprus says that deploying electricity‑storage systems is essential to lower consumer electricity bills and to make better use of renewable generation. It warns that procedural delays in issuing connection terms by the Distribution System Operator hinder storage projects, discouraging multi‑million‑euro investments and keeping market distortions that raise costs.

In April, output from major photovoltaic parks was curtailed by 66 %, and lost generation from residential solar between January and May could have supplied the annual electricity needs of roughly 7,500 households. The association argues that storage would allow households and businesses to consume a larger share of their own solar output, reducing reliance on the grid and stabilising the power system.
