Cyprus Energy Minister warns of 2030 electricity shortfall without natural gas

Energy, Trade and Industry Minister Michalis Damianos told a parliamentary committee that without a supply of natural gas Cyprus faces a serious electricity‑supply problem by 2030. He said the only way to avoid the shortfall is to complete the Vasiliko power project, stating “the Vasiliko project must be finished before 2030 – and it will certainly be finished before 2030.”

Damianos noted that the project is currently half‑built and that tender terms are expected to be finalized by July. He aims to have the contract awarded by the end of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027, hoping to avoid further legal delays.
