Cyprus expands all-day school program to 381 locations

Cyprus is expanding its all-day school program ahead of the September school year. Education Minister Athena Michaelidou announced that the number of participating schools has increased to 381, up from 220 in 2023.

The expansion is supported by an increased budget of approximately €6 million. The government aims to move beyond mere numerical growth by improving the quality of the program and the working conditions of teachers. Under the new framework, teachers will hold formal contracts through the educational service committee, and programs will feature structured schedules and curricula. School headmasters will oversee both morning and afternoon sessions, with evaluations conducted by ministerial inspectors.

The initiative builds on previous pilot programs, such as one at the Ayios Dhometios gymnasium, which received support from the EU and UNESCO. These efforts align with broader European goals to improve student achievement in core subjects and reduce early school leaving. Additionally, the expansion is intended to support working parents by providing reliable after-school care.
