Cyprus FM Kombos Talks with Iran Over Use of British Bases in Cyprus

Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos spoke by phone with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi about the escalating crisis in the Persian Gulf. During the call, Araghchi emphasized that foreign military bases on the island, notably the British sovereign bases including RAF Akrotiri, should not be used against Iran.

Kombos later posted on X that diplomacy remains essential for sustained de‑escalation. The conversation also touched on broader regional concerns, with Araghchi warning Bulgaria against permitting U.S. aircraft to operate from the Bezmer air base, which he said would facilitate aggression toward Iran. British officials have clarified that RAF Akrotiri will not take part in any defensive agreement with the United States, despite earlier indications that the UK might allow use of its bases for defensive strikes.

Both ministers said they communicate regularly, and Cyprus maintains its position of respecting international law while monitoring the situation.
