Cyprus Football Association concludes VAR investigation into APOEL–AEL match
The Cyprus Football Association has concluded its investigation into the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) procedures used during the APOEL versus AEL match in the 6th matchday of the Cyprus League. The inquiry was conducted by the Referees Committee, led by Antonio Damato, who reviewed all available audiovisual material and reports.
The committee clarified that the investigation did not target the accuracy of the referee's final decision, but rather the specific procedure followed by the VAR team. According to VAR protocols, in cases of potential offenses resulting in a red card—such as spitting—the VAR can recommend an On-Field Review (OFR) even after play has resumed.
Following the findings, the Referees Committee announced it will proceed with necessary actions, including the imposition of sanctions where appropriate. Additionally, new measures will be implemented regarding VAR operations and procedures to ensure full compliance with FIFA and IFAB guidelines and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
