Cyprus government approves relocation of pig farms in Kato Moni
The Cyprus Council of Ministers has approved a plan to relocate two pig fattening units in Kato Moni within the next two years. The initiative aims to significantly reduce the odor and pollution that the community has faced for decades.
Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner Ilias Myrianthous stated that the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment developed the plan in consultation with the local community and affected farmers. The Commissioner noted that the issue has directly impacted the quality of life for residents.
In addition to environmental measures, the government is focusing on rural development to encourage residents to remain in the area. This includes support through the Housing Revitalization Plan for Mountainous, Periphery, and Disadvantaged Areas, which provides financial assistance for permanent home ownership.
