Cyprus Health Insurance Organization includes Mounjaro in reimbursement list
The Cyprus Health Insurance Organization (GeSY) has officially included the pharmaceutical product Mounjaro (tirzepatide) in its list of reimbursable medicines. As of October 15, 2026, the drug will be reimbursed under approved protocols for both the treatment of type II diabetes and the management of obesity in adults.
This inclusion marks a transition from a process of examining individual requests to a structured reimbursement framework with specific criteria and pre-approval procedures. According to Sofia Petridou, Senior Officer of the Organization’s Drug Directorate, the new reimbursement capability for obesity applies only to specific cases meeting protocol criteria and is not a general provision for weight loss.
Data from January 1, 2025, to August 20, 2026, shows that 1,747 requests for Mounjaro were submitted, involving 972 patients. Of the 422 requests evaluated during this period, 238 were approved and 184 were rejected. Prescription of the medication will be handled by specific medical specialties following pre-approval from the organization, with availability currently limited to hospital pharmacies.
