Cyprus Health Minister emphasizes cancer prevention and healthcare upgrades
Cyprus Health Minister Neofytos Charalambides has reaffirmed the government's commitment to expanding cancer prevention and early diagnosis capabilities. Speaking at the 2nd Medical Cancer Conference in Ayia Napa, the Minister highlighted key initiatives including free population screening programs for breast and colorectal cancer, Pap tests, and HPV vaccinations for boys and girls.
To improve patient coordination and service planning, the Minister noted the establishment of the National Cancer Institute, which follows recent legislation and the appointment of its first Board of Directors. He emphasized that systematic data utilization and research support are essential to understanding patient needs.
In a separate development, Charalambides inaugurated the new Dental Department at Larnaca General Hospital. This expansion is part of a broader government strategy, in collaboration with OKYPY, to upgrade public healthcare infrastructure, modernize medical equipment, and improve service quality. The new department aims to provide integrated care by coordinating with treating physicians to manage complex cases. Additionally, a new Mobile Dental Unit has been introduced to provide preventive care to schools and remote communities in the Larnaca and Famagusta districts.
