Cyprus hourly government staff accept new collective bargaining agreement

Hourly government employees in Cyprus have accepted a government proposal for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, following an 18-month period of labor disputes. The decision, reached by a majority of union representatives during a national assembly, avoids planned industrial actions and strikes.

The agreement introduces progressive wage increases starting in October. Unlike a flat rate, the increases are designed to be income-dependent, meaning lower-income workers will receive a higher percentage increase compared to higher earners. The deal also establishes a minimum amount for general increases and creates a medical-pharmaceutical fund to provide benefits not covered by the national health system.

Union leaders noted that the agreement provides a stable foundation for workers and recognizes the essential role hourly staff play in the functioning of state mechanisms and public services.
