Cyprus House President meets Spanish Ambassador to discuss migration and bilateral ties
Annita Demetriou, President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, met with the Spanish Ambassador, Mercedes Alonso Frayle, to discuss bilateral relations, migration, and regional issues. The meeting emphasized the strong ties between Cyprus and Spain as EU member states, focusing on intensifying cooperation regarding migration challenges and the rising cost of living.
During the discussion, Demetriou expressed Cyprus’s solidarity with Spain regarding the migration crisis in Ceuta and called for collective EU action. Ambassador Alonso Frayle noted that increased connectivity between the two nations would further boost bilateral exchanges.
Regarding the Cyprus problem, Demetriou expressed disappointment over the lack of progress at the UN General Assembly due to Turkey’s stance. She stated that the Turkish claim for a ‘two-state solution’ is unacceptable as it would legitimize the results of the Turkish invasion and occupation. She reaffirmed Cyprus’s readiness to contribute to negotiations for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation based on international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
