Cyprus and nearby regions impose midday outdoor work bans amid heatwave

Governments in Cyprus, Northern Cyprus and Greece have ordered a suspension of outdoor work during the hottest part of the day as temperatures soar above 40 °C. In Greece, the Labour Ministry banned work in open areas from 13:00 to 17:00, while Northern Cyprus’ Labour and Social Security Ministry and the Cyprus Labour Inspection Department prohibited outdoor activity between 12:00 and 16:00. The measures apply to heavy and moderate tasks, including construction, delivery and transport by two‑wheeled vehicles. Authorities cite an orange‑level extreme‑weather warning and advise frequent shaded breaks, cool drinking water (10‑15 °C), breathable clothing and avoidance of strenuous activity during the peak heat. Health officials warn of heat‑stroke risks when body temperature exceeds 40 °C, especially for outdoor workers, the elderly, children, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses. Employers must monitor temperature and humidity, rotate staff, and provide shelters or shade where possible.
