Cyprus Justice Minister proposes emergency button for delivery drivers
Cyprus Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, has proposed the implementation of a ‘red button’ system for delivery drivers to alert police immediately during attacks. The proposal follows meetings with delivery platform companies to address rising incidents of violence and theft against drivers.
Fytiris noted that many attacks appear to be motivated by robbery rather than racial motives, particularly targeting independent drivers carrying significant amounts of cash. The proposed system would allow for a rapid police response, provided the companies agree to the implementation and victims provide timely notification.
Regarding potential links to drug trafficking, the Minister stated that investigations are ongoing. He noted that recent arrests have been so frequent that prison capacity is being strained. Authorities are working to dismantle both individual and organized criminal networks, including investigating whether some drivers may be acting as ‘hands’ for larger criminal organizations.
