Christodoulides and Erhurman attend Pyla Peace Festival

Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman attended the 6th Pyla Peace Festival in the mixed village of Pyla. The event, organized by the local Greek and Turkish Cypriot municipalities in cooperation with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), marked a rare social appearance of the two leaders together.

Despite the symbolic coexistence at the festival, political tensions remain high. President Christodoulides accused Erhurman of attempting to set preconditions for the resumption of negotiations, specifically regarding the Turkish Cypriot demand for a rotating presidency. Christodoulides stated that the Turkish side is demanding advance acceptance of certain positions without a willingness to discuss Greek Cypriot concerns.

Erhurman has countered by emphasizing that the content of a solution is more important than its label and has maintained that the acceptance of a rotating presidency is a necessary precondition for substantive talks. The two leaders are scheduled to meet again next week to continue discussions under UN auspices.
