Hakan Fidan discusses Cyprus solution and Mecca defense pact
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has outlined Turkey's stance on both the Cyprus dispute and the recently signed Mecca Joint Defense Agreement between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan.
Regarding Cyprus, Fidan emphasized that Turkey's ideal solution is a two-state model. He asserted that Turkey does not recognize the Greek Cypriot administration as a state and maintains that the stability and peace on the island are directly attributable to the presence of Turkish soldiers. He noted that the Greek Cypriot side has consistently refused an equal power-sharing arrangement with Turkish Cypriots.
On regional security, Fidan described the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement as technically similar to Article 5 of the NATO treaty, providing a framework for collective defense where an attack on one signatory is treated as an attack on all. He clarified that the alliance is defensive in nature and does not target any specific country, such as Iran, provided the members are not attacked first. He also mentioned that a committee and a general secretariat based in Saudi Arabia would be established, and noted that Egypt could potentially join the pact once technical issues are resolved.
