Cyprus media trust declines as social media usage rises
A study conducted by the Union of Cyprus Journalists reveals a significant crisis of confidence in the media within Cyprus. According to the research, which surveyed 1,000 media users and a group of journalists, 49 percent of respondents report that they do not trust the media, while only 40 percent express trust.
Social media has emerged as the primary source for news consumption, showing a steady increase in usage, while television has seen a relative decline. Despite the popularity of social media, it is also identified as the primary driver of misinformation, with 73 percent of respondents citing it as the main platform for fake news. In contrast, television and radio were rated highest for objectivity, reliability, and quality.
The findings highlight deep concerns regarding public manipulation. Approximately 86 percent of participants believe that public opinion is being manipulated during the investigation of scandals. Respondents primarily attributed this manipulation to government bodies (75 percent) and media owners (67 percent), while only 39 percent held journalists responsible. Additionally, 49 percent of respondents believe that journalists in Cyprus do not enjoy freedom of expression.
