Cyprus Ministry of Education workers demand implementation of court ruling

Workers employed in the Support Programs of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth in Cyprus are demanding the immediate and full implementation of a 2020 Administrative Court ruling. The workers submitted a memorandum to several authorities, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, and the Department of Social Insurance.

The 2020 court decision (Case No. 1368/2014) ruled that the classification of these workers as self-employed by the Director of Social Insurance was incorrect, unjustified, and lacked sufficient investigation. Despite this ruling, workers report that six years later, they still face periods without income and incomplete restoration of their labor and social security rights.

The workers are seeking several remedies for the period spanning 2013 to 2026, including: the recognition of their status as salaried employees, retroactive restoration of social security rights, payment of all earned wages, and compensation for periods without income. They also demand income security during program downtime through unemployment benefits and equal treatment with other indefinite-term public sector employees.
