Cyprus municipalities demand adequate funding amid fiscal concerns
The Cyprus Union of Municipalities and the five District Authorities (EOA) have issued a joint statement requesting adequate and stable state funding proportional to their responsibilities. This response follows reports characterizing the local government's financial situation as a ‘755 million euro bomb’ based on a Ministry of Finance fiscal risk report.
The local authorities reject being portrayed as a financial burden, arguing that they have assumed additional responsibilities—such as managing dangerous buildings and maintaining primary roads—without receiving corresponding resources. They noted that the 2024 local government reform could not automatically erase decades of debt and pension obligations.
Furthermore, the organizations rejected comparisons between their financial status and that of speculative businesses, asserting they should be evaluated based on public service and social contribution, similar to the central state. They called on the government to treat local government as an institutional partner in accordance with the European Charter of Local Self-Government.
