Cyprus official addresses fate of missing persons at memorial
During the annual National Memorial for the heroes and martyrs of Troulli, Cyprus Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, Nikolas Ioannidis, stated that resolving the fate of missing persons remains an "open debt of the State."
Ioannidis highlighted the historical sacrifices of the Troulli community during the 1955-1959 struggle and the heavy toll paid during the 1974 Turkish invasion. He noted that while some remains were identified in 2012, individuals such as Kostas Gavriil and Andreas Michail remain missing.
The Deputy Minister emphasized the government's priority to find a fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem in accordance with international and European law. He called for substantive cooperation from Turkey, specifically requesting access to occupying army archives and information regarding burial sites and the movement of remains to provide answers to the affected families.
