Limassol marine pollution triggers government response and new monitoring plans

Authorities in Cyprus are addressing recent reports of marine pollution along the Limassol coastline, following citizen complaints regarding foam, unpleasant odors, and debris. A high-level meeting led by Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hatzimanoli included representatives from the Department of Environment, the Limassol and Amathus municipalities, and the Cyprus Ports Authority to coordinate a response.

Investigations are focused on the Moni Wastewater Treatment Plant, following reports of a malfunction that allegedly led to the discharge of hundreds of cubic meters of untreated water into the sea. While the Deputy Minister maintained that Cyprus’s waters remain clean, she acknowledged the need for improvement and better inter-agency coordination.

To prevent future incidents, officials agreed to enhance monitoring through technological means, such as the use of drones and improved equipment for inspection vessels. There are also plans to establish a Coast Guard to ensure more effective maritime oversight and operational readiness before the next summer season.
