Cyprus PISA results show high rates of low student performance
Recent PISA assessment results indicate that 43.5% of students in Cyprus perform below the basic level across key subjects. This data highlights a significant gap between current local performance and the European Union's 2030 target, which aims to reduce the percentage of low-performing students to below 15%.
In terms of specific demographics, students with a migratory background demonstrated higher performance levels than their Cypriot peers in reading comprehension and mathematics. For instance, first-generation students with high socioeconomic backgrounds scored 486 in reading comprehension and 512 in mathematics, compared to 415 and 450 for Cypriot students, respectively.
Education Minister Athina Michailidou stated that actions are already being implemented to improve learning quality and address these challenges. The results also noted a high rate of hasty responses among students, with many answering questions in under 10 seconds without sufficient time spent on exercises.
