Cyprus Police warn of scammers impersonating cybercrime officers

The Cyprus Police have issued a warning regarding a new telephone scam involving individuals impersonating officers from the Cybercrime Sub-Directorate. The fraudsters contact citizens in Greek, claiming that the recipient has fallen victim to an online scam.

Under the pretext of investigating the alleged fraud, the perpetrators request personal information and sensitive banking details to steal money from accounts. While the calls appear to originate from local Cypriot landline numbers, authorities are investigating whether virtual numbers are being used to mask calls coming from abroad.

The police advise the public to remain extremely cautious, avoid following instructions from unknown callers, and never disclose personal or banking data over the phone. Citizens who have already shared such information are urged to contact their banking institutions immediately to prevent theft. The Cyprus Police emphasized that they never contact citizens in this manner to request personal or financial data.
