Cyprus: DISY candidates submit filings for 2028 presidency

Political activity in Cyprus is intensifying ahead of the 2028 presidential elections. Within the Democratic Rally (DISY) party, candidates Averof Neofytou and Giorgos Pamboridis have both submitted the required 500 signatures to formalize their candidacies. Pamboridis expressed his hope for a transparent and credible internal electoral process, noting the emotional significance of his return to the party.

The political landscape remains fluid as parties navigate potential alliances. Nikolas Papadopoulos, president of DIKO, noted that the withdrawal of Anita Demetriou from the DISY leadership race has shifted political dynamics, leading him to offer a positive assessment of President Nikos Christodoulides’ administration. Meanwhile, AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou has emphasized the need for progressive change in the country's governance.

Analysts warn that the early focus on the 2028 elections may come at a cost to democracy, potentially shifting political discourse from substantive policy-making to person-centered campaigning and short-term electoral strategies.
