Cyprus political parties clash over energy security and foreign policy
Political tensions are rising in Cyprus as the AKEL party raises alarms regarding the nation’s energy security. The party warns that delays in critical infrastructure projects, specifically citing the unfinished Vasilikos project and delays in energy storage systems, threaten the stability of the electricity supply. AKEL holds both previous and current administrations responsible for high electricity costs and a continued dependence on oil, noting that planned electrical interconnections may not resolve adequacy issues until 2030.
In response to political friction, the Democratic Rally has issued a rebuttal to AKEL, accusing the party of seeking to isolate Cyprus from its Western orientation. The Democratic Rally defended its strategic decision to strengthen ties with Israel, arguing that a country under Turkish occupation requires strong international foundations and presence in decision-making arenas. The party rejected AKEL’s criticisms of these partnerships, characterizing them as ideological obsessions that undermine Cyprus’s security and international standing.
