Cyprus political rift grows over Great Sea Interconnector project

Political tensions are rising in Cyprus as the DISY and DIKO parties unite to criticize Finance Minister Makis Keravnos regarding the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project. The dispute centers on the Minister's recent statements before the Parliamentary Energy Committee, where he expressed reservations about the project's sustainability and suggested that the final cost could significantly exceed the current €1.9 billion estimate.

Opposition parties are accusing the government of “double-speak” and a lack of clear political will. DISY has formally supported DIKO's position, demanding that the government provide specific and convincing answers regarding the project. They argue that while the administration labels the GSI as a project of strategic and national importance, its contradictory stances and the Minister's dismissive tone undermine both political discourse and the project's significance.

The GSI is viewed by supporters as a vital link to end Cyprus's energy isolation and serve as a bridge for cooperation with Greece, the EU, and Israel. Critics of the Minister's stance warn that mismanagement of the interconnection could lead to political distancing from Greece rather than strengthening regional energy ties.
