Cyprus poverty risk rises to 14.9% in 2025, women most affected

Eurostat data shows that 14.9% of Cyprus' population will be at risk of poverty in 2025, a slight rise from 14.6% in 2024. The increase represents roughly 146,000 people, up from about 140,000 the previous year. Women face a higher risk at 18.7% compared with 15.5% for men.

The poverty threshold for a single‑person household is €13,240 and €27,803 for a two‑adult, two‑child household, both up 6.8% on the prior year. Before social transfers and pensions, the at‑risk share was 33.6%; after these benefits it fell to the reported 14.9%, highlighting the importance of welfare payments. Across the EU, the average at‑risk rate stands at 16.3%, with Romania, Malta and France recording the highest national levels.

These figures underline a modest worsening of material deprivation in Cyprus and point to gender‑based disparities that may influence future social policy decisions.
