Cyprus power grid hit by 40 outages due to severe weather
Severe weather, including intense lightning and strong winds, has caused widespread power outages across Cyprus. As of Saturday afternoon, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) reported 40 medium-voltage faults and numerous smaller low-voltage issues throughout the island.
Impacted areas include seven regions in Nicosia, 15 in Limassol, nine in Paphos, six in Larnaca, and the community of Avgorou in Famagusta. The storm damage was caused by heavy winds and lightning, which led to tree branches falling onto power lines and, in one instance, a fire involving a utility pole in Kokkinotrimithia.
EAC spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou stated that repair crews have been deployed nationwide and call centers have been reinforced with additional staff. Due to the high volume of calls, the public is urged to contact the EAC helpline at 1800 only for emergencies involving risks to human life, such as fires or downed poles. Residents are encouraged to use the EAC Mobile app for updates on outage times and restoration progress.
