Greece and Cyprus prepare for 2026-2027 school year

Preparations are underway for the 2026-2027 school year in Greece and Cyprus. In Greece, the school year is scheduled to begin with blessings on September 11, with regular classes starting on September 14. Teachers are expected to return to their duties as early as September 1. The academic calendar for the year includes several holidays, though only one three-day weekend is expected for students, occurring on Clean Monday, March 15.

In Greece, Minister of Education Sofia Zacharaki announced significant restructuring of the school network. For the 2026-2027 period, 75 school units are slated for closure—comprising 43 kindergartens and 32 primary schools—and 146 units will be downgraded. This is part of a multi-year effort to align the school map with demographic changes.

In Cyprus, Minister of Education Athena Michaelidou stated that the upcoming year will focus on educational policies and school staffing. Secondary education classes are set to begin on September 7, while primary education starts on September 14. The Ministry is also managing a building program involving the construction, expansion, and improvement of various school facilities.
