Cyprus prepares school bus fleet amid reports of student vandalism

In preparation for the new school year in Cyprus, the Department of Road Transport (TOM) confirmed that 761 buses have passed technical inspections and are ready for service. Out of the vehicles inspected, 40 failed to meet requirements and will not be permitted to transport students. While approximately 600 buses are needed for school routes, the current availability provides a sufficient reserve.

During a Parliamentary Transport Committee meeting, bus companies raised serious alarms regarding repeated vandalism by students. Pambos Kapnos, President of the Pan-Cyprian Association of Tourist Bus Owners, reported incidents involving firecrackers and the misuse of fire extinguishers. In one instance, a driver lost consciousness after a fire extinguisher was discharged, requiring hospitalization.

Companies also reported the theft of emergency hammers used for breaking windows, forcing them to purchase hundreds of replacements. Transport Minister Evi TsolaKi stated that safety concerns raised by the Audit Office have been addressed, and the Ministry remains ready to handle any emerging issues. Unannounced inspections are scheduled to take place at all school units throughout September.
