Cyprus President reaffirms One China policy and thanks Beijing

President Nikos Christodoulides reaffirmed the Republic of Cyprus’s commitment to the One China policy during a reception in Nicosia marking the 77th anniversary of the proclamation of the People’s Republic of China. Christodoulides expressed gratitude for China’s long-standing support regarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cyprus.

He specifically noted China’s role as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and its contributions to the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus. Christodoulides emphasized that the current status quo on the island is unsustainable and reiterated the government's goal of resuming substantive negotiations to achieve a settlement that allows all Cypriots to live in a reunited European country.

Highlighting the 55 years of diplomatic ties, the President stated that Cyprus-China relations are based on shared commitments to the UN Charter, sovereignty, and international law.
