Cyprus Shipping Association welcomes EU ETS revision as boost for maritime sector

The Cyprus Shipping Association (CSA) welcomed the European Commission’s proposed revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), saying it creates a significant opportunity for Cyprus to accelerate investment in clean fuels, electric shore power (cold ironing), modern port infrastructure and other decarbonisation technologies. The association highlighted that the revised framework would channel a larger share of ETS revenues back into shipping, helping to strengthen the competitiveness of the island’s maritime economy.

CSA president Reginos Tsanos stressed that the green transition should be treated as a strategic investment rather than merely an environmental obligation. He warned against double burdens and unfair competition, urging careful assessment of any ETS extension to smaller vessels, while viewing the changes as a lever for growth, improved connectivity and a stronger, more competitive shipping centre for Cyprus.
