Cyprus shipping sector fuels growth amid mixed early‑2026 economic performance

Cyprus shipping remains a strategic pillar of the island’s economy, contributing about 7% of GDP (€1.9 billion) in 2025 and employing roughly 9,000 shore‑based workers plus 80,000 seafarers. The sector operates the fifth‑largest merchant fleet in Europe, controls over 4% of the global fleet and accounts for more than 20% of worldwide third‑party ship‑management activity. The Cyprus Shipping Chamber reported ship‑management revenues of €978 million in the first half of 2025, and announced a €16.2 million fund to support local startups.

In the broader economy, early 2026 data show a surge in construction activity, with authorised building permits up 54.9% year‑on‑year to 661,400 m², and vehicle registrations rising 15.1% to 18,570 units. Consumer prices remained modest, with the CPI increasing 1.1% YoY. However, exports fell 9.3% to €1.639 billion and tourist arrivals dropped 17.9% to 710,370, highlighting divergent trends across sectors.
