Cyprus signs contracts for first 120 MW battery storage system

The Cyprus Transmission System Operator (DSEK) will sign contracts on Tuesday for the island’s first central electricity‑storage batteries, delivering a total capacity of 120 MW. The projects are slated for delivery in January 2027 with installation completed within the following two to three months, aiming for operational status by the summer of 2027.

Energy Minister Michalis Damianos said the storage will curb curtailment of solar‑generated electricity and boost renewable‑energy penetration. The batteries are part of a €50 million programme, and the regulator has already issued connection terms for private investors. In total, 36 storage applications have been registered, requesting about 925 MW of capacity, including 180 MW from the Electricity Authority of Cyprus and 151 MW from private investors. The new 120 MW facility is expected to reduce daily solar‑generation cuts that have ranged from 50 MW to over 400 MW in recent years.
