Cyprus signs contracts for first 120 MW battery storage system

The Cyprus Transmission System Operator will sign contracts on Tuesday to install the island’s first centralised electricity‑storage batteries, totalling 120 MW. The batteries are slated for delivery in January 2027 and should be operational by the summer of that year, helping to capture solar power that is currently curtailed due to grid constraints. The project, part of a €50 million scheme, aims to lower photovoltaic curtailments and boost renewable‑energy penetration.

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus has also lodged applications for additional storage – 80 MW in Dekeleia and 100 MW in Moni – while private investors have filed requests for roughly 925 MW of capacity across multiple sites.
