Cyprus to add 125 MW of battery storage by summer 2027

Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Mikhalis Damianos announced that contracts have been signed for battery storage systems that will arrive in Cyprus in January 2027. The installations are scheduled to be completed before the summer of 2027, adding a total of 125 MW of storage capacity to the national grid. The storage is intended to capture excess electricity from renewable sources, reducing the need for generation cuts during the hot summer months and improving overall system adequacy.

In parallel, the regulator has approved connection terms for an additional 150 MW of private‑sector storage, while the utility Cyprus Electricity Authority (CEPA) is progressing its own projects totaling 180 MW, with parts of 80 MW and 100 MW expected to be ready before the 2027 summer. By the end of 2027, several hundred megawatts of storage should be integrated, potentially lowering electricity prices and strengthening grid reliability.
