Cyprus to install 40 automated border control gates at airports

Cyprus is set to upgrade its airport security infrastructure by ordering 40 advanced Automated Border Control (ABC) Gates. These high-tech systems are expected to be delivered by the end of this year and implemented in the passenger terminals of the country's two airports as soon as possible.

Minister of Justice and Public Order Kostas Fytiris stated that this move is part of preparations for the operation of the European Entry/Exit System and the replacement of existing passport control equipment. Unlike the current Interactive Kiosks, which still require manual intervention by a passport control officer to verify identity and make final entry or exit decisions, the new ABC Gates will provide fully automated border control using biometric technologies.

The transition to these automated gates is intended to improve passenger service and manage human resources more efficiently, particularly during periods of reduced staffing. The current kiosks were previously selected due to their smaller footprint and speed, but the new technology will facilitate Cyprus's integration into the Schengen Area.
