Cyprus: Tornaritis appointment sparks DISY tension
The appointment of Nikos Tornaritis as the Special Political Envoy of the President of the Republic for the Cyprus issue in Asia and Africa has caused internal tension within the DISY party. While the Council of Ministers announced the appointment as a neutral role aimed at promoting the Republic of Cyprus's positions, DISY Vice President Giannis Karousos criticized the move, suggesting it clarifies Tornaritis's stance regarding President Nikos Christodoulides. Despite the political friction, there are currently no plans to expel Tornaritis from the party.
Separately, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis stated that President Christodoulides is traveling to New York with ‘new ideas’ regarding the substance and methodology of the Cyprus negotiations. Letympiotis clarified that these proposals do not deviate from the established framework of a Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation or the Guterres Framework. The goal remains to create the necessary conditions for the resumption of substantive negotiations.
