Cyprus Transport Minister addresses roadworks and school bus safety

Cyprus Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Evi Tsolaki, has addressed key transportation issues involving infrastructure development and school bus safety.

Regarding infrastructure, Tsolaki inspected road projects in the Agia Fyla area intended to alleviate traffic congestion on the Limassol bypass. Specifically, the opening of Idomenos Street is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with an estimated completion time of three to four months. The Minister noted that while the project is relatively small, it is vital for managing traffic flow from Agia Fyla toward the Limassol roundabout. Funding is secured, and the tender process is being prepared.

On the issue of school transportation, the parliamentary transport committee held discussions following reports that some school buses were deemed unsuitable. Officials reported that out of a need for 721 buses, 319 additional inspections were conducted over the summer. While safety inspections continue, private bus companies raised concerns regarding student misconduct, including vandalism and theft. Additionally, representatives noted safety risks caused by overcrowding, with some buses carrying double their intended passenger capacity.
