Tilliria marks 62nd anniversary of 1964 Turkish bombings
On August 8, 2026, Tilliria observed the 62nd anniversary of the Turkish bombings that took place from 7 to 9 August 1964. During those three days the Turkish Air Force carried out intensive attacks, including the use of napalm bombs, killing dozens of soldiers and civilians and causing widespread destruction across the region.
Nikos Kleanthos, president of the Lower Tower of Tilliria Community Council and of the Tilliria Communities Federation, said the day is a “memory and honour” for the heroes who defended Tilliria and for residents who endured the attacks. He warned that the 1964 bombings marked the start of a long period of isolation and depopulation for Tilliria, which remains cut off from the rest of the Republic of Cyprus.
Kleanthos emphasized that the wounds from the bombings are still open and that the community continues to fight to remain on its ancestral land.
