Cyprus requests EU to restart discussions on mutual defense clause

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has formally requested the European Commission to reopen discussions regarding the EU’s mutual defense clause. In a letter addressed to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Christodoulides cited Article 42(7) of the Lisbon Treaty, which mandates that member states provide assistance to a member under armed attack.

The request comes amid heightened geopolitical instability, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine and hybrid threats. Christodoulides emphasized that the clause is vital for EU security during uncertain times and requested an update on current proposals and a timeline for future steps.

While the clause exists, its practical implementation remains a subject of debate. Previously, France was the only member to invoke the article following the November 2015 terror attacks. The issue gained renewed attention in Cyprus following a drone attack on a British military base on the island in March.
